CHARLOTTE HARBOR & THE GULF ISLANDS TO HOST 2009 SUNSHINE STATE BMX SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER

CHARLOTTE HARBOR & THE GULF ISLANDS, Fla. (July XX, 2008) - The Sunshine State BMX Association has selected Charlotte Harbor & the Gulf Islands as the location for one of four qualifiers for the 2009 State Series Championship. Sanctioned by the National Bicycle League, three days of competitive riding at the Charlotte BMX Track over the weekend of February 27 – March 1, 2009, is expected to attract between 2,500 and 3,000 athletes and their families.

"Charlotte BMX is accustomed to hosting championship races, such as the Summer Series Qualifier in October 2007 and a State Championship Qualifier in 2006," said Michele Martinez, Treasurer of Charlotte BMX, "We’re already looking at bringing other races to the area. The track quality, variety of accommodations and area activities continue to make Charlotte Harbor an attractive destination for these types of events."

BMX bicycle riding has been growing in popularity over the years and will be introduced to the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing. Two Southwest Florida riders who have practiced and competed at Charlotte BMX have their eyes on the Olympic gold. They are Largo, Fla. resident Amanda Geving, a 2008 Olympic hopeful and Sarasota, Fla. resident Mike Kapes, 2012 Olympic hopeful and Pro National #1. Notable Punta Gorda riders who have competed at Charlotte BMX are Amanda Carr, ranked World #1 and soon to be Pro Cory Watts.

"We’re looking forward to the high level of energy the Sunshine State BMX Association will be bringing into the community with this championship race," said Becky Bovell, Director for the Charlotte Harbor Visitor’s Bureau. "With anticipated attendance close to 3,000 people, the race will have a significant impact on local businesses."

All events for the championship qualifier will be held at Charlotte BMX at 2505 Carmalita Street, Punta Gorda, Fla. Updated event information can be found on the track’s Web site at www.charlottebmx.net .
